WHERE
Sankaty Innovation operates on location and virtually from our home base on Nantucket Island. Nantucket provides a rich historical example of our nation’s path to prosperity, and serves as an excellent breeding ground for focus and thought.
The word “Sankaty” is derived from the Native American word “sankoty,” meaning highland. This recognizes the highest elevation on land, enabling 360-degree views. It is also where the Sankaty Head Lighthouse was built in 1850, defining the highest viewpoint on Nantucket Island, MA.
Sankaty Head Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in the United States to be equipped with a Fresnel lens, an invention over 200 years old that was revolutionary for its time and continues to be in active use today. The Fresnel lens is widely considered to have saved millions of ships (ie: lives). It is able to reproduce the same light beam with a fraction of the material, making it much easier to produce light beams that can extend 20 miles for ship captains to see.
The brilliant simplicity of the Fresnel lens design serves as a reminder of how easy it is to lose sight of possibilities that are right in front of you.
